GIVE

“Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver.”

2 Corinthians 9:7

Frequently Asked Questions About Giving

We give to God because:

1/ It is God’s command:
From the Old Testament through the New Testament, God’s law calls all of His children to give.

“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,’ says the LORD of Hosts. ‘See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure.” – Malachi 3:10

“Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your crops.” – Proverbs 3:9

In the New Testament, Jesus Himself affirmed that He came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it. Therefore, we remain faithful to God’s teaching on giving.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” – Matthew 5:17-18

2/ It expresses our gratitude and love for God:
God loved us so much that He did not spare His own life to redeem us from our sins. We give as a concrete way of expressing, in part, our gratitude and love for Him.

“Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.” – 1 John 3:18

“If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him?” – 1 John 3:17

3/ It helps build and grow the church:
To be sustained and to grow, the church has many needs, both spiritual and material. Generous financial giving is essential for expanding God’s Kingdom.

“So all the men and women of the Israelites whose hearts prompted them brought a freewill offering to the LORD for all the work that the LORD through Moses had commanded them to do.” – Exodus 35:29

1/ The tithe (one tenth):
This is the basic duty of every child of God (including those who serve in ministry): to give one tenth of their salary or income from all their work to the church fund, as an expression of obedience to God and trust in Him.

“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,’ says the LORD of Hosts. ‘See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure.” – Malachi 3:10

“You must be sure to set aside a tenth of all the produce brought forth each year from your fields.” – Deuteronomy 14:22

2/ Freewill offerings:
Beyond the tithe, every child of God is encouraged to give additional freewill offerings, according to their ability and heart, voluntarily and without compulsion, to support missions, help the poor and those in need, build churches, and more.

“So the disciples, each according to his ability, decided to send relief to the brothers living in Judea.” – Acts 11:29

“Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7

We give because of God, so when we give, our attitude should please Him.

1/ Give quietly, without boasting or seeking recognition:

“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” – Matthew 6:3-4

2/ Give humbly:
“There were no needy ones among them, because those who owned lands or houses would sell their property, bring the proceeds from the sales, and lay them at the apostles’ feet for distribution to anyone as he had need.” – Acts 4:34-35

3/ Give cheerfully:
“And the people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given to the LORD freely and wholeheartedly. And King David also rejoiced greatly.” – 1 Chronicles 29:9

“Give generously to him, and do not let your heart be grieved when you do so. And because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything to which you put your hand.” – Deuteronomy 15:10

When we are faithful in giving, our faithful God gives us many good promises.

1/ We are blessed by God:
It is more blessed to give than to receive: the one who gives is blessed by God more than the one who receives.

“In everything, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus Himself: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” – Acts 20:35

“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,’ says the LORD of Hosts. ‘See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure. I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your land, and the vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit,’ says the LORD of Hosts. ‘Then all the nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight,’ says the LORD of Hosts.” – Malachi 3:10-12

God will bless all the work of our hands:

“Give generously to him, and do not let your heart be grieved when you do so. And because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything to which you put your hand.” – Deuteronomy 15:10

2/ God provides for our needs:
God is faithful to care for those who honor Him. We do not give in order to gain wealth, but because we trust that God will provide everything we need according to His good will.

“Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.” – Proverbs 3:9-10

A young boy offered five loaves and two fish to Jesus; then Jesus performed a miracle and multiplied the bread to feed five thousand men, not counting women and children (with twelve baskets left over).

“‘Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?’ ‘Have the people sit down,’ Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them. Then Jesus took the loaves and the fish, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples, ‘Gather the pieces that are left over, so that nothing will be wasted.’ So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.” – John 6:9-13

The Bible teaches the principle of sowing and reaping: those who give generously and cheerfully will be given all they need by God, so that they can abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” – 2 Corinthians 9:6
